Frequently Asked Questions

Can Biotane be used the same as diesel?

For the most part, Biotane can be used in blends with conventional diesel from as low as 2% (B-2) and all the way up to 100% (B100); the most common form is in a 20% (B-20) blend. In cold weather applications biodiesel will thicken at slightly warmer temperatures than conventional diesel and some precautions are required. When using biodiesel in cold weather climates the lower blend levels have fewer problems than the higher blends. When BIOTANE is blended with conventional diesel it will stay in suspension and when combined with normal winterizing precautions of conventional diesel cold weather problems are minimized. In some instances, diesel motors and fuel systems manufactured prior to 1994 may require some modifications when using blends higher than B-35. Many OEMs suggest the use of Viton seals or other non-rubber seals when the higher blends are used particularly with B-100. BIOTANE offers increased lubricity at all blend levels, which reduces engine wear and makes the components last longer.

Is Biotane safe?

Absolutely!! BIOTANE is made from biodegradable feedstocks and alcohol, if it is accidentally spilled on the ground, it will quickly degrade into natural organic residues. Based on industry standards Biotane is no
more toxic than table salt and is just as safe to handle. Like petroleum diesel biodiesel can stain some types of painted surfaces and bear metal therefore, it is recommended to wipe off any spills quickly. Mechanics that are familiar with Biotane and its use notice that their hands do not crack and dry out the way they do with petroleum diesel.

Biodiesel (Biotane) is the only alternative fuel that has successfully completed and passed the EPA tier one and tier two health affects test. Some of the other commonly used alternative fuels such as CNG were grandfathered into use without being subjected to these EPA tests and they are not renewable either.

Are there standards for Biotane?

Yes, in mid-year 2002 a new standard became effective called ASTM D6751 in which all certified biodiesel fuels must meet. Prior to any manufacturer selling biodiesel they must register with the EPA and be certified to use the Tier 1 and 2 health affects standards. A user should always verify that a producer is in fact in compliance with these regulations. Here at Imperial Western Products, a complete analysis accompanies every shipment to assure the user of product quality. The biodiesel industry is constantly looking at ways to improve product standards, revisit this site often for the latest updates.

Does BIOTANE reduce air pollution?

Yes, BIOTANE reduces most forms of air pollution. Most importantly BIOTANE reduces air toxens and cancer causing compounds. Pure BIOTANE can reduce cancer risks by 94%; B-20 will reduce risk by as much as 27%.
